Some of the best coffee projects we know of got their start on Kickstarter. From...
Don’t let its strangely blocky design fool you; the BUNN GRX-W Velocity Brew Coffee Maker is cutting edge kitchen technology. This is a commercial-grade machine at a residential-grade price, and perhaps thinking of it as a commercial machine will go some way toward forgiving its somewhat unsightly appearance. I’m working on that. It does help that my machine seems to be on track to last forever. Score one for commercial-grade materials!
The glitzy feature of this system is its around-the-clock instantly ready hot water reservoir. I can brew a good-sized pot of coffee, up to ten cups, at a moment’s notice, and have it ready in three.
BUNN GRW Velocity Brew Coffee Maker product feature:
The internal thermostat in the stainless steel water tank keeps this baby bubbling at a steady 200º which is the absolute optimal temperature for releasing the essential oils that give coffee its flavor. Because it’s always ready to go, there’s no warm-up time needed, and I can make that coffee instantaneously. The secret to my new favorite cup of coffee isn’t only in the ideal temperature; it’s also enhanced by the patented spray-style nozzle in the brewing basket.
Rather than directing a single stream of water into the coffee grounds, a spray system allows more of the individual coffee grounds to soak up the water, and bloom to release flavors naturally. I didn’t know these details about coffee development when I first bought my BUNN GRW Velocity Brew Coffee Maker, but its features intrigued me and I read up on brewing—so coffee-maker ownership has turned out to be educational!
Whether or not the mechanics of the brewing interest you, the flavor difference is apparent. Until I owned a BUNN GRW Velocity Brew Coffee Maker, “quick coffee” and “good coffee” were mutually exclusive terms; if I wanted a cup without waiting it would be crummy instant, and if I wanted a cup I’d enjoy, I’d have to wait.
The instant hot water, I should note, can be used in its own right. I’m sure tea drinkers would enjoy it for that purpose, and I’ve read of people using it for quick cooking rice or ramen or soups. As for myself, I like to use my instant and endless supply of hot water for cleaning. But that’s just an extra perk.
My primary enjoyment is still the great coffee I’m brewing throughout the day. Among other great qualities of the BUNN GRW Velocity Brew Coffee Maker, its quality with a small volume of brewing is just as stellar as with the full ten cups, which can’t be said about every coffee maker. And because it’s so instantly available, I tend to brew-as-I-go, making enough to fill my favorite mug, and then brewing fresh again when I’m ready for another.
The BUNN GRW Velocity Brew Coffee Maker doesn’t have a timer to set for automatic brewing, but that would be pretty redundant anyway, given how quickly even a full pot brews. There’s no need to set it ahead since I can have it as soon as I appear in the kitchen. The one automated function of this machine, for which I’m glad, is the “vacation switch” that turns off the heating element if the machine isn’t used for several consecutive days. When I’m leaving on a planned vacation, I unplug it myself, but I’ve already had reason once to be grateful when an emergency took me out of the house unexpectedly and I knew I didn’t have to worry about a fire hazard in the house. And when I arrived home—boy, was I glad to have my own top-quality coffee.
